Senior Pharmacy Technician – Rotational - London

Moorfields Eye Hospital based at City Road are looking for Rotational Clinical Services Pharmacist to join their team. The post holder will assist in the provision of a safe and efficient patient focused clinical pharmacy service working as part of the main dispensary team.

JOB SUMMARY

The post holder will act as the Senior Pharmacy Technician and work on a rotational basis to support the Lead Pharmacy Technicians in the provision of an effective and efficient Pharmacy service to Outpatients, Day-case/Inpatients including private patients and paediatric patients at the Richard Desmond Children’s Eye Centre (RDCEC) and to provide safe and effective pharmacy procurement and distribution of medicines at Moorfields Eye Hospital at City Road..

The post holder will be responsible for managing and coordinating workflow in the dispensaries, monitoring the quality of Pharmacy service provided to relevant clinical areas and to actively promote the implementation of important Trust initiatives in order to enhance patient experience and ensure an excellent and cost efficient service is provided. 

The post holder will act as line manager to the Pharmacy Technicians and Assistant Technical Officers (ATOs) / apprentices and will be responsible for supervising and managing day-to-day operational activities of all staff working in the Pharmacy dispensaries and stores and/or within the clinical areas.

The post holder will work with the Associate Chief Pharmacist – Clinical Pharmacy Services, Governance and Medication Safety, the Lead Pharmacist – Clinical Services, City Road Division and the Specialist Pharmacists and relevant Pharmacy Leads on service developments and to ensure that Pharmacy services meet the needs of the users.

The post holder will be required to work with and provide operational cover for other Senior Pharmacy technicians to ensure a safe and effective clinical Pharmacy service is maintained. 

The post holder will be required to work with and support the Lead Pharmacy Technician for procurement and distribution to implement and maintain various systems to meet procurement of medicinal stocks and its storage and supply to various clinical areas trust wide.

MAIN RESPONSIBILTITES

 Dispensary Services: 

1. To be the Operational Coordinator and manage the day-to-day running of the Pharmacy Dispensaries to ensure that an efficient service is provided to patients and to assist in the development of the technical Pharmacy service throughout the Trust.

2. To coordinate the management and prioritisation of the workload in the dispensaries and the operational rotas to ensure adequate cover is in place at all times to maintain an efficient service, including late shifts and Saturday rotas. This is for all staff working in relevant dispensaries including Pharmacy Technical staff, Assistant Technical Officers, and Rotational Clinical Pharmacists 

3. To oversee supply and distribution of Emergency Resus Medication.

4. To monitor staffing levels in the dispensaries, to coordinate and conduct regular audits onprescription waiting times, monitor medication related near misses and dispensing errors and the quality of the dispensing service in conjunction with the Specialist Pharmacists and the Lead Pharmacist – Clinical Services, City Road Division. 

5. To regularly review processes in the dispensaries for Prescription Charges and Exemptions to ensure that prescription charges are received and exemptions checked as required by statute. 

6. To develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) relating to the Pharmacy dispensaries to ensure that they are current and follow Trust and National policies and procedures as required, and to ensure all prescriptions are filed and archived in date order and that private prescription records are maintained.

7. To ensure that Patient Information Leaflets are provided for all licensed medicines dispensed to patients and that supplementary leaflets are provided for un-licensed medicines where appropriate.

8. To maintain good working knowledge of all ophthalmic pharmaceutical product developments and new products.

9. To support the Lead Pharmacy Technician, clinical services in the provision of information and feedback to the Lead Technician for Procurement Services regarding dispensary management data and analysis that can be used for strategic development of the service.

10.To support the Lead Pharmacy Technician, clinical services to resolve, advise on and respond to patient complaints, emergency and non-routine Dispensary and Technical Pharmacy service situations and staffing issues and assist Rotational Clinical Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians in resolving drug misadventures, e.g. dispensing errors.

11.To support Lead Pharmacy Technician, clinical services in managing and maintaining medicines stock in the dispensaries and relevant clinical areas by working closely with the Lead Pharmacist for Procurement and Medicines Supply Chain

12.To be an authorised signatory for prescription cash reconciliation and OTC sales reconciliation.

13.To act as an Accredited Checking Technician (ACT) as per service requirements and needs 

14.To collect money for prescriptions (where applicable) and reconcile the cash register money collection if applicable and/or invoices at the end of the day.

15.To generate invoices and manage invoice queries for private outpatient and/or discharge prescriptions using the Compucare system.

Clinical Services:

16.To support the Associate Chief Pharmacist – Clinical Services, Governance and Medication Safety and the Lead Pharmacist, Clinical Services, City Road Division in the development and implementation of a comprehensive clinical Pharmacy ward and pre-assessment service in accordance with relevant legislation and guidance.

17.To support the Lead Pharmacy Technician for clinical services in the development and implementation of all Standard Operational Policies and Procedures (SOPs) for Clinical Services in conjunction with the Specialist Pharmacists and the Lead Pharmacist – Clinical Services, City Road Division.

18.To ensure that all processes and procedures relating to Controlled Drugs stored within the Pharmacy and within the clinical area are adhered to at all times and that regular stock checks are carried out in accordance with local policy and to ensure that appropriate records are maintained at all times.

19.To ensure medication safety at all times and that all patients and/or their carers are counselled by appropriately trained members of staff on the safe and effective use of their medicines.

20.To ensure that all medication incidents are recorded on the Trust Safeguard system by staff operating in the dispensaries

21.To be responsible for removing obsolete stock, adding new stock and increasing stock levels according to service demands.

22.To be responsible for overseeing the review and top-up of the Emergency Drug Cupboard, refrigerator and freezer.

23.To maintain up to date knowledge of the trust’s Medicines Management Strategy and provide senior technical input to further develop a cost effective clinical Pharmacy service.

24.To communicate effectively with all senior Pharmacists and staff working within the dispensaries regarding dispensary matters and technical Pharmacy service policies.

25.To work within broad technical Pharmacy codes, GPhC guidance and manage all aspects of the technical Pharmacy service.

 

Important Requirements

  • Registered with GPhC (General Pharmaceutical Council)
  • BTEC or NVQ level 3 in pharmaceutical services or equivalent
  • Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
  • Experience of working in Dispensary
  • Experience within the field of ophthalmology
  • Good knowledge of clinical Pharmacy, to advise on drug dosages and treatment selection
  • Good clinical skills to analyse drug charts and prescriptions
  • Excellent communication and patient counselling skills
  • Excellent organisational skills and problem solving skills
